Program Note:
One of my most vivid concert memories is of hearing Marek Jablonski perform Franz Liszt’s Funérailles. So when I was asked to write a test piece for the E-Gré Competition, I decided to go for a post-modern take on that masterpiece of the Romantic repertoire. I have re-imagined Liszt’s harmony, added some inside the piano sounds, references to the Dies Irae theme and hopefully come up with a result that allows a contemporary pianist to use their technique in new ways.
