Program Note:
My compositional style evolved quickly once I began working with George Perle in New York. The Sonata #1 marked a broadening of the highly controlled emotion content of my earlier works. Its three movements are subtitled The Penitent, Hymn and Sacramental Dance. These titles are not programmatic, but are meant to characterize my attempt to reconcile the great classical tradition with the music of our time.
