Instrumentation: Violin and Piano

Composed: 1992

Premiere: The Winnipeg Art Gallery (The Winnipeg Chamber Music Society)

Program Note:

My Second Violin Sonata had a rather convoluted gestation. I started writing the last movement for my friend Victor Schultz, while I was in residence at Tanglewood in 1987. A few years later, Gwen Hoebig and David Moroz asked me to write them something, so I included a short bit of theme that came out of my Piano Concerto (which has just recently been premiered at the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra’s New Music Festival). David wanted something rhythmic and dance-like, so we hit upon the idea of a Fandango. That idea of dances helped me unify the entire piece.
